Apple Music Now Has More Than 50 Million Users

Just last month Apple announced that its music streaming service Apple Music is now home to 40 million paid subscribers ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/04/apple-music-40m-paid-subscribers/). Now in an interview with Bloomberg, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple Music has over 50 million users, although those numbers are said to consist of both paid subscribers and those who are partaking in the trial.

Unfortunately it seems that this still lags behind Spotify who is the clear leader in the music streaming scene where they recently announced that they had 75 million premium subscribers ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/05/spotify-75-million-premium-subscribers/), with around 170 million active users in total. Some analysts have speculated that Apple Music could overtake Spotify this summer ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/02/apple-music-overtake-spotify-summer/) and while Spotify’s lead is pretty big, it could end up being a pretty close race if Apple were to maintain their pace.

During the interview, Cook also spoke about the company’s plans for video content, such as video streaming of original TV shows and movies, but declined to dive into specifics only to say, “We are very interested in the content business. We will be playing in a way that is consistent with our brand. We’re not ready to give any details on it yet. But it’s clearly an area of interest.”

Apple had previously released some shows through Apple Music, such as Carpool Karaoke, but recently moved it to the TV app ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/05/apple-stream-carpool-karaoke-tv-app/). This has lent some credence to the rumors that Apple could be planning on selling subscriptions through its TV app ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/05/apple-sell-subscriptions-tv-app/) where it could also be used to house Apple’s TV shows and movies.
