  • You have to create a free account ^(https://mega.nz/#register) (50GB free cloud storage) to use this app.
  • If you don’t want to register, you can install MEGA’s Chrome ^(https://mega.nz/#chrome) or Firefox ^(https://mega.nz/#firefox) extension—to reduce loading times, improve download performance and strengthen security.

DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release

Requirements 7-Zip ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/12/7-Zip-portable-32-bit-64-bit-x86-x64.html), NPP/Notepad++ ^(https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/) or other text editor, appmarsh.com Launcher Generator/PAL ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/07/PortableAppscom-development-portable-appmarsh-edtion.html), appmarsh.com Installer/PAI ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/07/PortableAppscom-development-portable-appmarsh-edtion.html).

  1. Get the latest portable app. template ^(https://sourceforge.net/projects/thumbapps/files/Internet/MEGA%20Sync/template/), and extract the content with 7-Zip.
  2. Get the latest MEGA Sync client release ^(https://mega.nz/sync).
  3. Put it in the same folder as the extracted template, in our example C:TEST.
  4. Extract the installer MEGAsyncSetup.exe with 7-Zip to MEGAsyncPortableAppMEGAsync folder, Extract installer
    Into AppMEGAsync
    click Auto Rename when asked, Auto Rename
  5. Browse to MEGAsyncPortableAppMEGAsync folder, delete:
    1. folder: $PLUGINSDIR,
    2. files: $R0, $R0_1, uninst.exe.
  6. Look up version from MEGAsync.exe‘s Properties, Look up version
    or you can get complete version from MEGAsync’s About box or from Softpedia ^(http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/File-Sharing/MEGAsync.shtml), Softpedia
  7. Browse to MEGAsyncPortableAppAppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. 3.5.8.0 not just 3.5.8,

    PackageVersion=3.5.8.0
    DisplayVersion=3.5.8 (5c0e09)
  8. Run PAL, paste the template folder address C:TESTMEGAsyncPortable, and click Go—a new launcher will be created, Create new launcher
  9. Test the new launchers by following this guide ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/12/Check-portable-application-clean-stealth-using-before-and-after-run-snapshot-log-comparison.html).
  10. When all is OK, then delete the MEGAsyncPortableData folder and run PAI, paste the package folder address C:TESTMEGAsyncPortable, and click Go—to create the installer package. Create installer
  11. Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Don’t forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade 🙂
  12. If you find any changes that’s not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support ^(http://www.appmarsh.com/2018/12/thumbapps-upgrade-support.html).

Portability Notes

  • MEGA Sync do not have portable mode. It writes non essential data to Windows registry and stores its settings in Windows data folder while running.
  • Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
  • You can help by sending request to the official developer ^(https://mega.nz/contact) to add “portable mode” to their future release.
