The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform for smartwatches is based on a new ultra-low power system architecture that’s aimed at extending battery life while delivering new, personalized experiences. The focus on battery longevity makes sense as the battery life is one of the key selling points for a smartwatch.
The new smartwatch chip from Qualcomm comes after two and a half years. Android smartwatches have been without next-generation silicon for an unreasonably long amount of time but with today’s launch, we can now expect a resurgence in the market.
There’s a new ultra-low power co-processor in the chip that will do most of the heavy lifting when the smartwatch isn’t being actively used. It will power the ambient display and sensors thus taking that load off of the main processor which, according to Qualcomm, would require using up to 20 times more power.
Qualcomm says that it’s working closely with Google to enable improved features for Android smartwatches in addition to high performance and superior connectivity. New personalized experiences such as the Enhanced Ambient Mode, Dedicated Sports Experiences, and Traditional Watch Mode have also been made possible by this chip.
Qualcomm has confirmed that it has started mass producing this new chip for Android smartwatches which means we can expect new products to arrive in the coming months.
