Luxury automobiles represent just a fraction of what Rolls-Royce does, even though it’s most popular for making really expensive cars. One of the company’s core businesses is to develop engines for airplanes. The British giant has now teamed up with Uptake, an AI software company based in Chicago, to predict any operational issues in its Trent fleet of aircraft engines.

The Chicago-based company sells artificial intelligence solutions to industrial companies who use the technology to predict the performance of complicated machines by utilizing data analytics and machine learning.

The Rolls-Royce Trent engines are used in Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A330neo widebody aircraft, next generation aircraft that have received hundreds of orders from airlines across the globe. The company has been dealing with issues concerning the blades on some of its engines which has resulted in delayed aircraft deliveries for both Boeing and Airbus.

Rolls-Royce will be able to use the AI technology that Uptake providers to gain deeper insight into the engine performance and further improve its Trent fleet for its customers. “With industrial AI and machine learning techniques, we can increase the uptime of our engines and help customers extend the life and value of their critical assets,” added Tom Palmer, SVP of services for the company’s aerospace business.
