Streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music have family plans, in which in theory, families could share a plan where it would be much cheaper than if everyone were to sign up for it individually. Unsurprisingly some have abused these plans, where groups of friends share them instead of families.
Unfortunately for Spotify users who are doing this, it seems that the company is cracking down on such practices. In multiple reports fromand (via ), Spotify has been sending notifications to users asking them to confirm their home address. The idea is that as a family, everyone should be living together in the same home, which means everyone’s location should be the same.
Users who don’t confirm their home addresses will lose access to the plan, according to Spotify’s email. Now we’re not sure how this works and if all users under the Spotify Premium for Family are affected. This is because families can technically live apart from each other, where kids could be off in another state or country for school, and so on.
When reached out to comment, a Spotify spokesperson said, “Spotify is currently testing improvements to the user experience of Premium for Family with small user groups in select markets. We are always testing new products and experiences at Spotify, but have no further news to share regarding this particular feature test at this time.”
