Apple Extends Keyboard Service Program to Newer MacBook Pro, MacBook Air Models

Starting today, all MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models equipped with any generation of butterfly mechanism keyboard are eligible for Apple’s Keyboard Service Program ^(https://www.apple.com/support/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks/). The 2018 MacBook Air, 2018 MacBook Pro, as well as the latest 2019 MacBook Pro models now also qualify for free repairs (via appmarsh ^(https://www.appmarsh.com/2019/05/21/2018-macbook-pro-air-keyboard-repair-program/)).

While the new keyboard design on the 2019 MacBook Pro is still classified as “third generation” butterfly mechanism keyboard like the 2018 MacBook Pro and 2018 MacBook Air, Apple says it has changed the material in the keyboard’s butterfly mechanism this year to “substantially reduce problems that some users have seen.”

Owners of the 2018 MacBook Pro and 2018 MacBook Air will have their keyboards replaced with ones that have the new materials during the repair.

Below is the complete list of MacBook models eligible for free keyboard repairs up to four years after the original purchase date worldwide.

Apple Introduces New Backlight Service Program for 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro

As noted by the folks over at appmarsh ^(https://www.appmarsh.com/2019/05/21/apple-backlight-service-program-macbook-pro/), Apple is finally addressing the ‘flexgate’ issues suffered by select 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro displays by announcing a new Backlight Service Program ^(https://www.apple.com/support/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service/). According to the program, Apple will repair affected devices for free, which include machines sold between October 2018 and February 2018.

Apple notes that a “very small percentage” of 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro displays can exhibit vertical bright areas along the bottom of the screen or a backlight that malfunctions entirely. Users with affected notebooks should find an Apple Authorized Service Provider, make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store, or contact Apple Support to arrange a mail-in repair.

There have been ongoing complaints from MacBook Pro owners about uneven backlighting, though reports have covered machines beyond the 13-inch 2018 MacBook Pro. There has been speculation that the problem is caused by a delicate and easy-to-break flex cable.

The Backlight Service Program will be available to MacBook Pro owners for four years after the first retail sale of the unit, or two years from May 21, 2019, whichever is longer.

Only the following MacBook Pro models are eligible for free repair under the new program:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

An internal Apple repair document shows that MacBook Pro displays with a confirmed backlight issue are eligible for LCD replacement at no charge.
