Samsung Cancelling Unconfirmed Galaxy Fold Preorders Later This Month

After some reviews showed the Samsung Galaxy Fold screen could easily mod, the company has halted all unconfirmed pre-orders.

According to a new statement from Samsung (via Reuters ^(https://www.reuters.com/article/us-samsung-elec-fold/samsung-electronics-says-no-anticipated-shipping-date-yet-for-galaxy-fold-idUSKCN1SD0NJ)), Samsung is approaching Galaxy Fold preorder customers asking them to confirm that they wish to continue with their order. However, Samsung has no idea when the Galaxy Fold will now ship.

The email, which you can see in full below, says that they are “making progress in enhancing” the Fold, but that they aren’t quite ready to give any sort of anticipated shipping date. They won’t have another update on the situation for weeks.

“If we do not hear from you and we have not shipped by May 31st, your order will be canceled automatically,” the South Korean tech giant ^(https://www.appmarsh.ca/news/samsung-q1-2019/)‘s U.S. subsidiary told Galaxy Fold pre-order customers in an email late on Monday, which was confirmed by a Samsung spokeswoman.

“We are making progress in enhancing the Galaxy Fold ^(https://www.appmarsh.ca/news/galaxy-fold-teardown/) to make sure it measures up to the high standards we know you expect from us,” reads the statement. “This means that we cannot confirm the anticipated ship date yet.”

The delay comes after several reviewers reported issues with Galaxy Fold sample units. Several users accidentally peeled off an integral screen layer on the foldable phone, while a few others reported completely broken main screens.

Samsung has handled the Galaxy Fold controversy poorly from start to finish, from the way it initially blamed reviewers for causing the screen damage, to the way it put pressure repair specialists iFixit to pull its critical teardown of the device from its site ^(https://www.appmarsh.ca/news/galaxy-fold-teardown-samsung/).

For a flagship device with a $2,000 USD price tag, this sort of mess doesn’t inspire confidence in either Samsung or the handset.

Apple Store in Victoria Unconfirmed as Mayfair Mall Expansion Nears Completion

Last fall, it was rumoured an Apple Store would land in British Columbia’s capital city of Victoria, at Mayfair Mall, as part of the retail outlet’s expansion plans.

CHEK News said an unnamed source told them an Apple Store was coming ^(https://www.appmarsh.ca/news/victoria-apple-store-mayfair/), while months later, Citified seemingly corroborated the story by saying it was hearing the same thing ^(https://www.appmarsh.ca/news/apple-store-victoria-mayfair/).

With the Mayfair Mail expansion set to complete, the mall refused to comment on whether an Apple Store was coming, according to CTV Vancouver Island ^(https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/mayfair-mall-nears-completion-of-expansion-1.4062810). General manager Laura Poland only said “The leasing team will spare no expense, no effort to try and secure retailers that shoppers in Victoria would like.”

New stores opening this week include Roots and Olson Europe, while Indigo will open later this year. The mall expansion is on schedule and “our retailers are taking a phased approach of opening when it suits them,” said Poland.

The $72 million expansion at Mayfair will bring the total square footage to 554,000 at the mall when complete.
